The progression of the project step by step

Identifying the challenges and technological research

This item consists of the following:

  • Identifying the pilot project areas relating to the operating environment and description of preliminary challenges
  • State-of-the-art report
  • Benchmarking (researching national and international examples of sustainable and environmental robotics)
Creating a development environment

We will create a model, improve and experiment with the urban environment as a testing platform for sustainable and environmental robotics as well as a brand-new RDI collaboration model for the industry.

  • Creating and engaging a network of experts
  • Researching and analyzing existing innovation and/or piloting platforms and reapplying the information to this project
  • Conceptualization of an Innovation platform model and a new RDI ecosystem for the Helsinki metropolitan area, including a plan of action. This task consists of two items:
    • The physical urban environment as a testing platform
    • Description of a new RDI development process and ecosystem that serves the theme and new product innovations

Both models will be assessed in the following item through corporate and product development pilot projects.

Pilot program and assessing the functionality of the testbed

We will implement a series of product development pilots in collaboration with participating companies and organize opportunities for trials in an authentic urban environment. We will utilize Metropolia’s Robo Garage workshop -yhteistyöalustaasituated at the Myyrmäki Campus that will provide a physical space, resources, and equipment for short-term and long-term experiments as well as extensive project development projects.

  • Business and product development pilots
  • The urban environment as an innovation platform for robotics: testing the platform through eco-conscious experiments
Data and analytics

The item reinforces the robotics development platform from the point of data handling and applications and use of artificial intelligence. This is done by researching the interoperability of data handling and technology and the requirements of its wider utilization by applying them specifically to a robotics development environment and by assessing them in practice. We will also analyze the data generated by the robots as well as data from the operating environment as source material for artificial intelligence and aim to identify possibilities for added value gained through the use of AI solutions.

  • A report of the general requirements of data handling and interoperability that the operating environment requests or might request
  • Applying information gathered from the report to a selected use case
  • Identifying new possibilities for future use

This will further improve the operating conditions of the project’s target groups by making data more accessible and minimizing data handling risks while simultaneously maximizing its benefits. By doing so, it will set clearer guidelines and create new opportunities for growth for the businesses involved.

Funding possibilities for small and medium-sized businesses and for enhancing RDI activities in the robotics field

We will organize an event showcasing different funding programs and provide case studies about companies that have participated in international research and innovation projects. We will also organize events with the goal of bringing investors and innovator companies together.

  • A series of four events where we will showcase different funding possibilities and case studies of companies and projects
  • A workshop on composing project applications for the target groups
  • An event for bringing companies and investors together during 2025 and a pitching forum for SMEs in 2026

Main results of the project

The main goal of the project is to improve the local robotics innovation environment and to promote RDI collaboration that benefits businesses. Knowledge and expertise will be shared more effectively and innovation cooperation between businesses and businesses and RDI organizations will increase.

The project is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centre) for Häme and is implemented by the experts at Forum Virium Helsinki and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences.
